The people who are searching using these keywords know exactly what they want, unlike the ones that are searching using the broad ones. Sometimes these phrases are known as buying phrases. While it will take you time to get everything in place, this strategy can provide tons of traffic over a long period of time. Of course it's possible to build this into a steady stream of thousands of targeted visitors to your site at no out of pocket cost. A word of caution though, even when you're choosing the long tail keywords, be very careful to make sure they relate to your niche and aren't vague.
You can also directly contact webmasters and bloggers in your niche and ask them to place your website's link on their site, because this will obviously help you build backlinks, which are crucial for your search engine rankings. Don't make your request out of the blue, though, but instead create a relationship through email and then ask, as this makes it more likely that they will add your link.
